Introduction

APLUS is extending its renowned writing workshops to the Web with our Online Writing Center! Beginning in Spring 2006, APLUS will offer a series of online services designed to bring the unique quality of APLUS instruction to students who cannot attend workshops at our Rockville centers.  Students can take advantage of both leveled writing workshops and essay editing services.

Online Writing Workshops

The leveled online writing workshops follow APLUS's regular writing workshop structure and offer a series of carefully crafted essay writing prompts. Students practice writing 3 different essays, focusing on the skills needed to succeed in the classroom and specialized academic tests and programs. For each submission, APLUS writing teachers will evaluate student writing and provide a detailed review including corrections, revisions, and comments for improvement. Students will then revise their essays for a second review. This online essay writing practice offers the following benefits for students and parents:

Individual Instruction: Students share a one-on-one relationship with instructors and progress toward academic excellence at their own pace. There are no distractions to student learning, since both teacher and student can focus on each essay individually. There is no classroom, so there are no classroom disruptions get in the way of maximum learning.  

Flexible Schedule: Students can work around their own, individual schedules, focusing on essay practice when it is convenient for them. Since this essay writing practice is via e-mail, there is no class schedule and students can practice anytime and anywhere.

Structured Standards-Based Curriculum: The highly structured class is based on national writing standards and focuses on the essentials of writing. Each student receives 3 essay topics that were carefully designed by APLUS writing teachers to cover the different writing styles and skills needed to prepare students for all kinds of writing challenges.

Reviewed by Highly Qualified Professional Writing Teachers: Students are assured that their essays will be reviewed by a certified professional writing teacher. There is no computer grading. For each submission, students will receive a detailed rubric with teacher comments and suggestions for writing improvement. Teachers focus on one essay at a time, so all comments are specific to the student and designed to boost the individual's writing skills. 

Online SAT Essay Writing

APLUS Online SAT Essay Workshop offers a writing workshop created specifically to increase student success on the new essay portion of the SAT test. Students answer prompts taken from actual SAT tests or modeled on those created for the SAT. In addition to learning how to write essays responding to the SAT prompts, students also practice test-taking strategies, including time management, prompt analysis and formal essay structure. While Online SAT Essay Writing follows the same format as the other Online Writing Workshops, students are strongly encouraged to write their essays within the suggested time limit. This type of time limit helps students practice the art of writing under tight deadlines.

How does Online Writing work?

APLUS Online Writing Workshops are designed to give students the utmost flexibility while offering the same rigorous APLUS instruction that students receive at the Rockville centers. Teachers use carefully selected prompts that focus on a variety of writing styles and skills as well as rubrics designed to offer specific feedback to students. This method allows for maximum student improvement. Since the course is online and has no set class time, students may work whenever it is most convenient for them.

When students receive writing prompts, they spend the first week going through the writing process to complete a first draft. That essay is e-mailed to APLUS, and highly qualified teachers will review and evaluate the student's draft. Once the draft, with teacher comments, is returned, students revise and edit a final draft, which is sent to the teacher. Teachers then fill out a detailed rubric assessing the student's work and giving suggestions for future essays. At the same time, students are working on the next prompt, which is due the following week. A suggested schedule is provided for each student that offers guidance on time management.

Refund Policy

After receiving the first graded essay, students can withdraw if they are not satisfied with the program. A charge of $45 will be deducted. There is no refund for withdrawal after second submission.
