NCKU WILL BESTOW DOCTOR OF SCIENCE DEGREES, HONORIS CAUSA, TO BRITTON CHANCE AND AARON CIECHANOVER

NATIONAL CHENG KUNG UNIVERSITY (NCKU)

“INDUCTS” TWO WORLD-CLASS SCIENTISTS AS

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI:

NCKU WILL BESTOW DOCTOR OF SCIENCE DEGREES, HONORIS CAUSA,

TO BRITTON CHANCE AND AARON CIECHANOVER

Tainan, Taiwan. (February 11, 2008) – With enormous and ubiquitous pride on campus, National Cheng Kung University, an intensive and comprehensive research university in Taiwan, announced today the induction of two of the world’s intellectual giants as its alumni. On February 19, 2008, NCKU will bestow the university’s supreme honors the degrees of Doctor of Science, honoris causa to Britton Chance, father of biophysics and Aaron Ciechanover, Nobel laureate in chemistry of 2004.

“The event on February 19 has two profound implications for NCKU. First, it will be the consummation of relations between Aaron and Britton with NCKU. Second, it is the first time this supreme honors from NCKU are bestowed to intellectual giants from United States and Israel,, which is of course a manifestation of our university’s resolution to become an institution of higher learning at the world stage,” said Academician Michael Lai, President of NCKU. “In the past year, these extraordinarily active scientists and men with profound humanity concerns, despite their backbreaking schedules, have visited NCKU twice, and have maintained close-range research contacts with and made deep impact on our faculty and students!”

“I am so pleased that we can take this opportunity to further cement our relations with them and turn our interactions with them into long standing ones,” concludes Academician Lai.

Britton Chance

With legendary accomplishments spanning nearly 70 years and with over 1,300 scientific papers, Britton Chance has assumed the iconic status in science and technology in the 20th and 21st centuries. He is a member of the National Academy of Science and has served on many committees including the all important United States President's Science Advisory Committee. Chance has been a Guggenheim Fellow and a Foreign Fellow at Cambridge University. He is President of the Medical Diagnostic Research Foundation in Philadelphia, and has been the director of many foundations in Philadelphia including the E.R. Johnson Foundation of the School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. In addition he has held many special appointments within National Institutes of Health, including the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the Working Group on Molecular Control, and the Biotechnology Research Resources Program. He also pioneered the field of diagnostic optical biomedical imaging.

More recently, Britton Chance has worked with Optical Society of America and other medical societies to promote biomedical optics. He is also a member of 12 international societies including the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Max- Planck-Gesellschaft zur Forderung der Wissenschaften, and the Royal Society (London). Britton also authored the book entitled Medical Optical Tomography: Functional Imaging and Monitoring.

Aaron Ciechanover

Aaron Ciechanover is already the newest Visiting Distinguished Chair Professor in the Institute of Innovations and Advanced Studies of NCKU. He holds the position Distinguished Research Professor of Biochemistry in the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine and Research Institute of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel. In year 2000, he was awarded the prestigious Albert Lasker Prize for Basic Medical Research. Then in 2004, Ciechanover shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Avram Hershko and Irwin Rose for their discovery of the ubiquitin system for intracellular protein degradation. Ciechanover and Hershko are the first scientists to win the Nobel prizes from Israel. Ciechanover is also a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA.

Ciechanover’s research converted intracellular proteolysis into a major research area in modern biology and biomedicine. His pioneering studies that unraveled the mechanisms of protein ubiquitination and degradation opened doors that led to understanding of pathogenetic mechanisms of diseases such as malignancies and neurodegenerative disorders, and as a result brought forth development of new generation of highly specific mechanism-based drugs. In the past two and a half decades, tens of thousands of papers were published, following the pioneering work of Ciechanover and his colleagues.
